The Obama Organic Garden

obamagarden1It may be old news by now, but it remains a curious event that the agri-business protested Michelle Obama’s plan to grow her little garden without pesticides and fertilizer.   The backyard garden is an idea that needs to be brought back for a variety of reasons.   It is healthier and provides a great source for fresh vegetables.  Many people have never eaten a tomato fresh from the garden, or taste green beans and corn freshly picked.  It may shock you that a little hard work seems to be such a point of personal pride and accomplishment as well as a taste treat.

I commend the First Lady for the leadership on this issue. More Americans should consider this option. In a tough economy, it can reduce your food bill as well as supply your table with something that is healthy for your family.

Let’s also dispel the myth that pesticides have to be chemical rather than organic.  The concentrated form of chrysanthemums will not only chase away but kill most pest.  Planting a few of these around your garden help keep pest away.  Even a soapy solution will strip bugs of their protective oils and leave them to die.  This is just a few ideas that need to be promoted in a healthy “back to nature” approach.

Why not compost as well and help the world reduce the inordinate amount of trash going into the land fills?  Most communities do not come close to the 30% recycling and composting standards that show that they are at least trying to resolve the trash issue.   Some of that reaches beyond the trash hauler.   It is our duty to separate trash that can be recycled and composted. And, that brings be back to the Obama organic garden.  Composting provide the rich and healthy soil that plants need. Why fertilize when you can compost?  Composting is one of those “Save the Earth” ideas that deserves more credit.

Pesticides and fertilizers are not the best or smart solution.  The honey bee population is under attack by these products.  They are good bugs out there, you know.   When these chemical products run off into our waterways, they add yet another threat to the balance of nature.  We may not be able to do with fertilizer and pesticides when crop production is a worldwide issue, but we should be able to make some better inroads on the subject.

Mid America CropLife Association shows a narrow mindedness that disallows anything else to be considered.  I am sure that they would like to lobby for yet another restrictive law to limit our freedoms and promote their favorite cause.  I hope more Americans will consider an organic garden as part of a healthy lifestyle and a greener world.  Discover how to have a Green Certified Home at the Green Homes League.
